Inside Additions?
These types of additions are known as "inside additions". It is almost a tongue in cheek or an oxy moron phrase to call it an inside addition. Aren't room additions suppose to be outside and inside jobs are known as remodels. That is usually the case.  In many different cities where these high ceiling conversions are not a routine check in the building department, the plan checkers sometimes scratch their heads. "Where is your sediment control plan?" asked one building official. "We don't need one", I replied. He said "Oh yes you do!" After I showed him that this room addition does not change the footprint of the home and does not involve moving dirt he finally understood that we don't need a sandbag plan to control sediment.

Loft additions, whether designed to be an open mezzanine or an enclosed bedroom, home office or the like, are very unique. The structure is within the existing home.
