Just because you have a vaulted ceiling doesn't mean you cannot capture some of that space. A window dormer or dormer addition can add valuable living space, bring in new light and keep the price down. It is common for a two story addition to cost much more than a loft addition, but a dormer addition is designed to gain space without creating a full scale two story addition.

Optimizing the use of a vaulted ceiling by converting it into a bedroom can be a little tricky. Certain building code tolerances have to be met such as the minimum height a doorway can be. This loft addition was one of those tricky conversions. In the end, through the design process, we were able to meet building code requirements and built this high ceiling conversion into a smooth flowing floor plan.

The room was designed next to the existing stairway and features semi-private window openings for a more open look and feel. This open loft addition is directly over the dining room. This home office is more professionally equipped. It With seating for three and lots of extra cabinet space it is not your standard issue home office.

Over by the printers you can see the pocketing French doors that slide out of the way when opened.

Let's convert this high ceiling into a new home office. Eight foot pocketing glass doors with reeded glass. High ceiling conversions are often referred to as loft additions. This may not always be the most accurate description because a loft addition suggests that you still have a portion of the home that is "open to below". In this case all the high ceiling space was utilized to create a new super function home office.
