David Friesen, General Contractor

44 years of building experience in Southern California and an intimate knowledge of accessory dwelling units.

In 1997, David bought his home in the city of Fullerton and immediately added and permitted “the cottage” bonus room addition in the rear property space (corner lot). It was not classified as an accessory or auxiliary dwelling unit initially but it was later converted fully to an ADU.

Conventional thinking might be to build an ADU or JADU to rent to outside tenants, but for some owners, the new space is for themselves leaving the primary home available for rent. After the Friesen household became empty nested, David and his wife Patricia, moved into “the cottage” where they lived the ADU lifestyle for eight years. During this time they were able to rent the primary residence to outside tenants.

The Friesens sold the property in 2017, but remained in contact with the new owners. With the new California ADU legislation going into effect in 2020, David suggested to them that they modify a portion of the existing house to become a JADU.  The new owner immediately saw the potential rental income and asked David to submit plans and apply for a permit to convert existing space within the primary residence into a junior accessory dwelling unit (JADU) as well. When completed, this would be one of the first homes in Fullerton zoned as a single family residence to have multiple ADUs on the property.
