See What's Possible for Your High Ceiling
Sometimes the best place to create more living space isn't outside your home. It's right above your head. Two-story living rooms, dining rooms, and open-to-below areas can contain a surprising amount of unused space overhead. With the right ceiling height, structure, and layout, that open volume may be able to become a bedroom, bonus room, office, open loft, or another functional part of the second floor. At TruPlans, high ceiling conversions are our specialty. Our team has more than 20 years of experience planning these unique inside additions, from straightforward open-to-below conversions to vaulted ceilings and more complex designs. We've also had the opportunity to work on high-ceiling conversions right here in the Santa Clarita area, giving homeowners a chance to see what these transformations can actually look like, from the original high ceiling and 3D design to the finished room.

Santa Clarita High Ceiling Conversion: Creating a New Bedroom
This Santa Clarita project began with a large high-ceiling area and an opportunity to make better use of the space overhead. The conversion created a new spacious bedroom on the upper level, transforming previously open volume into usable living space without extending the home's exterior footprint.
Before construction begins, homeowners naturally want to know: What is this actually going to look like? That's where 3D design becomes especially useful. A high ceiling conversion can be difficult to visualize because the proposed room doesn't exist yet. You're looking up into an open space and trying to imagine a floor, walls, windows, access, and an entirely different ceiling below. TruPlans uses 3D visualization to bring the proposed design to life before plans are finalized. Homeowners can better understand the proportions of the new room, how it connects with the existing second floor, and how the conversion changes the room underneath it. For this Santa Clarita project, the conceptual design provides a look at the transformation before the finished space is shown.

High Ceiling Conversion
A high ceiling doesn't have to become just one room. Another project in the Santa Clarita/Valencia area demonstrates how a larger open-to-below space can provide an opportunity to create multiple usable areas upstairs. For this design, the high ceiling space above the living and dining areas was used to create a new bedroom along with an open loft/bonus room. Access near the existing staircase allowed the new spaces to connect with the home's upper level.

Hear From the TruLoft Podcast: Why High Ceiling Conversions Require a Specialist
High Ceiling Conversions Are Inside Additions
Most room additions expand outward. A high ceiling conversion works differently. We're creating new square footage within the existing volume of the home. That makes these projects a specialized type of structural retrofit. A new floor system has to integrate with the existing structure, while the architectural design needs to account for the spaces both above and below the addition. The new room also needs practical access from the existing upper level. In some homes, the top of the staircase or an existing hallway provides a natural connection. Other layouts require a more creative solution. These are the details our team evaluates before developing the final plans. Adding a room inside an existing high ceiling isn't quite the same as constructing a traditional exterior room addition. In this episode of the TruLoft podcast, we discuss why high ceiling conversions require specialized experience, including the structural retrofitting involved, integrating new construction into an existing home, and some of the details that can affect the finished result. For Santa Clarita homeowners who have looked at their high ceiling and thought, “Couldn't we just put a floor there?” this episode provides a closer look at what actually goes into turning that idea into a properly planned addition.
