TRULOFT is a Truplans Inc specialty (niche) brand that designs both architectural and structural plans for homes in San Diego county for retrofitting a new room addition within the existing walls of your home. The company teamed up with the owners of CALOFT, Luis Salcido and Aaron Hernandez, way back in 2004 when they first met in a Southern California loft builder owned and operated by Chris's brother-in-law.
Truplans Inc founder, Chris Doering, is half Japanese and for a few decades managed restaurants like Benihana, and even helped in the design and opening of several flagship Sushi and Shabu Shabu restaurant brands. His favorable comments about planning and building small spaces is unusual for someone who owns a company that provides architectural and engineering services. His projects have ranged from simple remodels to multiple new homes from the ground up. So he is used to seeing larger scale projects. |
The Japanese design influence seen right here in San Marcos CA. One of the first restaurants he worked in as a young man was to become an assistant manager for a Japanese steak house known as Kyoto Japanese Steak House in the Midwest way back in the 1980's. One of the features of that restaurant was a dining area which was called a tatami room. Although Chris is American born this was his first experience to more quant Japanese design styles. As he learned to speak basic Japanese he also learned the culture. Chris explains, "One of the first things you notice in a Japanese home is the attention to every little living space". "In Japanese living conditions, the construction of living spaces is more vertical due to the prime value of land on an island nation. When I started designing and estimating loft additions and high ceiling remodels most of the projects were between 150 and 300 square feet. When I saw the first space that was over the front door I questioned the homeowner if they really wanted to build a room addition over the front door. After-all that was such a small space, but the finished product turned out amazingly efficient and useful and served the client's needs well." After that Chris has always encouraged homeowners who have even the smallest of spaces to gain that there is much more space overhead than you might realize.

This residential home in the city of San Marcos has a very high ceiling. There is so much space here you could get several new room additions all at once. However, we only plan to add a new bedroom addition.
