Loft Additions & High Ceiling Conversions in Brentwood, California
We're California's #1 High Ceiling Conversion Experts.
Brentwood in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area has many homes with high ceilings. This means that as long as you need the space, we've got a fast and affordable solution for gaining more space in your home. Instead of building outward, why not look at the space you already have? In rooms with enough height, that open space may have the potential to become a new loft, bedroom, office, playroom, or other functional area.
At TruPlans, we specialize in helping homeowners explore these possibilities. A loft addition can be a great alternative for homeowners who love their existing home and neighborhood but have started to outgrow their available living space. Rather than giving up valuable backyard space for a traditional room addition, a high-ceiling conversion can make use of the space above an existing room. Of course, every home is different. The amount of available height, existing structure, floor plan, stairs, and other factors all play a role in determining what can realistically be designed. That's why we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach to loft additions.
Our process starts with understanding your home and what you want to accomplish. Whether you've been thinking about adding another bedroom, creating a dedicated home office, giving the kids a space of their own, or simply making better use of an open area, we'll help you explore the possibilities. You don't have to figure out the architectural plans, engineering, and permitting on your own. TruPlans can take your project from the initial evaluation through design, 3D visualization, engineering, and the permitting process needed to move your project forward.
You may not need a bigger house. You may just need to make better use of the one you already have.

Your High Ceiling Has Better Things to Do Than Fly Drones
What are high ceilings really good for? We give our best funny guess as to why in the YouTube video above. A high ceiling is often something homeowners simply inherit with the house. It's part of the original architecture, so you get used to looking at it without questioning whether it could be changed. Until one day, you start wondering what that space could look like if you did something completely different with it. That's where design can change the way you see your home. We use architectural drawings and 3D visualization to explore ideas before anything is built. Instead of trying to picture a new floor, railing, staircase, or room from a flat drawing, you can actually see how a proposed design could fit into the existing space. And sometimes the answer isn't what you initially imagined. A space that looks too awkward from the ground might have an interesting layout from above. An open area might work better than an enclosed one. The design process is where those possibilities start to take shape. That's why we don't want homeowners to look at a high ceiling and immediately assume, "Well, I guess that's just how the house is." Maybe it is. Or maybe there's something better hiding up there.

TRULOFT is the specialized loft addition team within TruPlans, Inc., focused on the architectural planning and engineering involved in creating new space inside an existing home.
A traditional room addition typically expands a home outward by extending the existing walls. A high ceiling conversion takes a completely different approach. Instead of building onto the exterior, the design works within the home's existing structure to transform previously unused vertical space into a functional new area. It's not simply a matter of drawing a floor over an empty ceiling. Over the past 23 years, TruPlans has developed extensive experience designing residential projects involving high ceilings and unique interior additions. Our team combines architectural planning with engineering coordination to develop designs that work with the existing home rather than treating the new space as a separate addition. Whether you're starting with a rough idea or already know exactly what you'd like to create, Truplans can help you explore the possibilities, visualize the proposed design, prepare the architectural plans, coordinate engineering, and navigate the permitting process and get HOA approval (if necessary). |

What actually happens after you contact TruPlans?
A loft addition may look simple once the finished project is complete, but there is a lot that happens behind the scenes to take an idea for an unused high-ceiling space and turn it into a finished room. In this episode of the TruLoft Podcast, our team takes a step back and walks through the process from beginning to end. From the first phone call or online inquiry, the conversation starts with understanding the homeowner's goals and learning about the existing home. From there, the process moves into the home evaluation, where we look at things like ceiling height, windows, the existing layout, and other details that can affect the design.
One thing we emphasize throughout the process is accuracy and transparency. Rather than throwing out a generic ballpark price, we take the time to understand the project and provide a detailed quote based on the actual scope. Once a project moves forward, our team measures and scans the home so the plans are based on the existing conditions, not simply an old set of plans that may no longer accurately represent the house. The podcast also gives you a look at one of the most unique parts of our process: the 3D design meeting. Homeowners can see their proposed space taking shape and participate in the design rather than trying to imagine everything from a two-dimensional floor plan. And the process doesn't end when the drawings are finished. The episode goes through engineering, HOA review when applicable, city plan check, pre-construction planning, construction, jobsite safety, and our post-construction quality process. We even get into some of the unexpected realities of construction, including the importance of keeping curious cats out of the walls.

A collection of various home conversions
Every home has a different layout, ceiling height, and set of possibilities. The projects below are examples of high-ceiling conversions we've designed in California, showing just a few of the ways an open area can be reimagined. While these projects aren't located in Brentwood, they give you a closer look at the type of work TruPlans specializes in and the different design possibilities available when working with existing vertical space.
Compilation of Some of Our Favorite Conversions
This video features 8 different high-ceiling remodels we did. Some projects were designed and built as loft conversions or mezzanine levels, while others transformed into bedroom additions, baths, home offices, home movie theaters, and more.

We Make It PossibleThe transformations in the video to the left showcase how high ceilings in other California homes have been reimagined into completely new living spaces. What began as open space became everything from additional rooms to lofted areas designed around the needs of each homeowner.
While every home is different, these examples can help Brentwood homeowners start looking at their own space in a new way. A high ceiling that has always simply been part of the home's architecture could potentially offer an opportunity for something more. The possibilities can look very different from one home to another. Some homeowners may want an open loft that adds flexible space without losing the connection to the room below. Others may be looking for a more defined room that can serve a specific purpose, such as a bedroom, office, or bonus space. The design ultimately depends on the home and how the homeowner wants to use the additional space. |

The project featured in this video is a great example of how an unused high-ceiling area can be transformed into functional living space without completely closing in the room. Located in nearby Danville, CA, this home had a large open area that offered the potential for additional square footage, but the homeowners also wanted to maintain the spacious feeling of the existing room. Rather than converting the entire high-ceiling area, we designed an open loft that used only part of the available space. This approach created additional usable square footage while leaving a portion of the ceiling open below. The result was a new loft area that adds functionality to the home while preserving the sense of height and openness that made the original space appealing. For Brentwood homeowners with a high ceiling or open area they aren't fully using, a similar concept may be worth exploring. While this project was completed in Danville, it gives homeowners in Brentwood and surrounding communities a real example of what can be possible when an unused high-ceiling area is carefully designed around the needs of the home. |

Don't Just Take Our Word For It, See What Homeowners Have to SaySometimes the biggest obstacle to creating additional space in your home is simply not knowing what is possible. That is exactly what makes this homeowner's experience so relatable. Before reaching out to TruPlans, she wasn't convinced that the high ceiling in her home could actually be transformed into usable living space. After searching online for high-ceiling conversions and loft additions, she came across TruPlans' projects and began watching videos of completed transformations. Seeing real examples helped her visualize what could potentially be done in her own home. After sharing the projects with her husband, they decided it was time to reach out and explore the possibility.
If you've ever looked at the high ceiling in your Brentwood home and thought, "I wish we could do something with that," you're not alone. Many homeowners don't realize that their unused vertical space may have potential until they see what has been done in other homes. "I don't have a good imagination. It's way better than I could have imagined, so I love it."
