That's exactly what we're exploring with this project. The homeowners reached out to us with a straightforward goal: expand their existing open loft and make better use of the space.
We understand why some homeowners are hesitant to give up their high ceiling. A large open space above the living area, especially with sunlight pouring through transom windows, can create a dramatic sense of openness and grandeur. But in this particular home, the open-to-below area is relatively small. The benefits of keeping it open are limited, while the additional functionality gained by extending the loft is substantial.
From the upstairs, the existing railing provides only a narrow glimpse toward the backyard. Extending the loft would bring the occupants much closer to the windows, creating a better vantage point to enjoy the backyard, natural light, and surrounding scenery.
More importantly, this loft has already become an important gathering space for the family. It's where they watch movies, play, and spend time together -- and the growing collection of toys makes it clear that the space is being put to good use. Expanding the loft would give everyone more room to spread out while making the entire area feel more comfortable and functional.
